March to follow at dusk. All are welcome.
Take Back the Night is a global movement to raise awareness against gender-based violence, especially sexual assault and intimate partner violence experienced by women and girls. It began in 1972 in the US, with the name meant to address the need for greater feelings of safety after dark. Today, while the movement goes by the same name, we recognize that sexual violence can happen to anyone of any gender and does not only happen “at night”. The movement has expanded to reach countries and communities around the world, with some cities holding protests, marches, walks, runs, bike rides, yoga sit-ins, or candlelight vigils.
Survivor’s Hope Crisis Centre works throughout the entire Interlake-Eastern area to support those impacted by sexual violence through crisis care, counselling, education, and advocacy. We conducted a recent survey and up to 40% of respondents shared that they, or someone they know, have experienced sexual violence in rural Manitoba communities. This issue happens in our towns. Our friends, family members, loved ones , and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit relatives are being harmed.
We will not stay silent.
