Lizanne is a hairdresser, photographer, artist, aerial instructor, and doesn’t like getting stung.

These gardens at the Water Tower are a joint initiative of the City of Selkirk, Communities in Bloom, and Home Hardware. In addition to beautiful flower beds there are bordered plots for growing vegetables – all available to area residents at no charge. Truly a Community Garden, and a unique feature of the Selkirk landscape.

This National Historic Site erected in 1852 is typical of Red River architecture of that time. The grounds feature a vegetable garden, a spiral herb garden, and a secluded “Secret Garden” originally for the private use of the Rector

In many Indigenous origin stories, the turtle is said to support the world, an icon of life itself. For some, the turtle is a marker of identity, culture, autonomy, and a deeply-held respect for the environment. In this installation, the four sections, each almost 10 metres long, align with the four directions of traditional teachings, depicting the spiritual journey of the Anishinaabe.

Three acres of this landscape are dedicated to an Urban Prairie reserve. Over 50 different local and natural grasses and wildflowers were used to return the property to its historical state. A system of bio-swales directs water to natural drainage on the property, using the natural prairie as a filter.
