3 Must-Attend Ice Fishing Derbies Outside of Winnipeg
Bundle up, hit the ice, and reel in some cash! Anglers of all ages and skill levels are invited to compete in these 3 Ice Fishing Derbies in 2026, located only a short drive north of Winnipeg.

KidFish Ice Fishing Derby
The 11th Annual KidsFish Ice Fishing Derby returns to Selkirk for another unforgettable day on the Red River. This beloved community event brings families together on the ice while supporting two incredible causes: the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
The derby is open to anglers of all ages, making it a fun and inclusive event for everyone. Prizes will be awarded to the top five youth participants and the top ten anglers overall, with a $5,000 grand prize up for grabs! The first 600 kids aged 15 and under through the gate will receive a free ice fishing rod and reel combo, while everyone can enjoy a lively atmosphere throughout the day, featuring mascots, games, random prize giveaways, and a cash 50/50 draw.

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Fishing Derby
With over 700 participants and more than 900 tickets sold in previous years, the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Fishing Derby is one of the most anticipated ice fishing tournaments in Manitoba.
Anglers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to compete for a chance to win the $25,000 grand prize. The grand prize is for the longest walleye and is paid out for the top 10 entries. Final cash amounts depend on total tickets sold. Additional prizes include five early-bird prizes ($300), five door prizes ($300), and $300 cash prizes for first fish, most fish, and smallest fish (any species). There’s also a $20 side bet for the longest jack and a 50/50 cash draw. So, every fish caught gives you a chance to win some extra cash!

Proceeds from the derby support the community’s annual Powwow and Treaty Day celebrations.

Grand Marais Fishing Derby
The Grand Marais Ice Fishing Derby offers a full day of fishing on Lake Winnipeg, followed by a fun windup at the local recreation centre!
Every fish caught is a chance to win, with prizes awarded for hidden time and length. Last year’s first-place winner for longest fish took home $1,000! Participants can register fishing holes online or in person at select local businesses. Same-day registration will also be available on derby day, space permitting.
After the fishing wraps up, head to the Grand Marais Rec Centre (90 Matilda Ave) for the derby windup! There will be food and beverages, silent auctions, and 50/50 draws!

Plus, no reservations required, tent or no tent, it's that easy! However, if you do have an ice shack or tent, bring it, and leave it up until removal notices at the end of the season.
